Carlos Overpass Construction To Start In Spring

CARLOS, Texas - An intersection with a deadly history is changing soon.

TxDOT plans to build an overpass in Carlos on State Highway 30 at F-M 244.

Those plans include tearing down a 70-plus year old store

Cars zip down Highway 30, a well traveled road between College Station and Huntsville and right past this intersection at F-M 244.

Those passing by often stop at the Carlos Store.

That's where Dominique Kelley works.

"Well I know a lot of customers are like really devastated about it coming through and being harder to get to home or harder to get where they need to go. It's just kind of not needed to them you know, but I know it's better and safer for everyone else," Kelley said.

She's talking about the overpass planned for this intersection - part of a $ 6 million makeover by TxDOT. The state hopes to prevent the numerous deadly accidents at this intersection.

Including one on New Year's Eve 2013 when a car pulled out in front of a bread truck, killing a man in that car.

F-M 244 will be an overpass that will completely go over Highway 30. To do that TxDOT still has to secure about 12 acres of area land.

The Carlos Store may be gone for good as result. The Fuller Family has operated it since 1983 and rebuilt after a fire in 2002. Janie Fuller tells us they don't know yet if they'll build a new store as her parents are at retirement age.

Bob Colwell with TxDOT tells us the overpass will include entrance and exit ramps for easy access. Negotiations on the land are ongoing.

"Working with the property owners of the Carlos Store and because of all the litigations we can't speak on that so I can tell you though we are working on that," Colwell said.

Dominique Kelley knows that means she may have to work on finding another job.

"It's sad all the time to see customers come in here like older customers that have been coming here for 30 years and all the sudden they don't have a store that's like home you know," said Kelley.

Construction is expected to start in the spring of 2015 and will take about a year and a half.

TxDOT says they looked at a number of ideas to improve safety including a traffic signal, but decided an overpass was the best option.
