AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - A Senate Education Committee discussion on sweeping high school curriculum and standardized testing overhauls feels more like a campaign debate.
A gubernatorial hopeful and two lieutenant governor candidates are trying to one-up each other Monday.
State Sen. Dan Patrick heads the committee but is trying to unseat incumbent Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst in a May 27 runoff for the Republican nomination.
The winner faces another committee member, state Sen. Leticia Van de Putte, the Democratic lieutenant gubernatorial nominee.
Also attending was Democratic state Sen. Wendy Davis, who is running for governor.
Patrick said low standardized test scores show Texas' educational system is "in crisis." But Van de Putte said scores will improve as students adjust to a new testing implemented in 2012.
Davis complained that passing standards are too fluid.
