Houston Abortion Doctor's License Suspended

HOUSTON (AP) A Houston abortion provider's medical license has been suspended temporarily by the Texas Medical Board which determined he didn't have proper admitting privileges at a nearby hospital as required under a recently effective state law.

The Austin-based board said Friday Doctor Theodore Herring Junior had performed 268 unlawful abortions and continuing his practice would be a "continuing threat to public welfare."

The board says a December inspection of his north Houston clinic showed Herring didn't have admitting privileges to a hospital within 30 miles of his clinic as mandated. The panel says another inspection last week showed he still lacked the privileges and completed paperwork.

A hearing on the suspension could be held in 10 days.
