Man Overcomes Odds to Run First 5k

A local man’s inspiring journey to run the race of a lifetime

Good to Know:

Romack doesn’t plan to slow down anytime soon.  He tells News Three he designs websites and plays in a “Beep Ball” softball league.

COLLEGE STATION - Justin Romack is a runner.

And a drummer.

"There are so many noises and I feel like drummers really get the pleasure of capturing fun," Romack said.

There's something else.

"I was born with congenital glaucoma."

Justin is blind.

He was able to see early in life, but his condition got worse until he eventually lost his sight altogether. He's had over 90 eye surgeries which have helped him briefly regain his sight at some very opportune times

"I had it for about a month and a half, my son was born, and two days later, I lost it. And you could get really frustrated about that, or you could say, 'whoa, wait a minute...I just got to experience the birth of my son when I wasn't seeing two months ago.'"

His outlook is impressive. Perhaps more inspiring, though, is his drive.

"Most of my life when someone has told me that I can't do something, it only makes me want to do it more," Romack said.

The Inaugural Aggie 5k was his first race...and he didn't do it alone.

"I said, 'well would you ever want to run with me?' And he said 'yeah I was kind of wondering what you would think about that.' and I said, 'well, how does it work?' and he goes 'there are a few methods, but one we could try is I just hold on to your elbow,'" said his friend and worship band leader, Tim Suel.

And that's what they did. Tim and Justin ran and finished...literally together.

While he can't see, Tim's always got his eye on the prize.

"If you can keep pressing on and keep trying to find new ways to test your limits and test your boundaries, that's what makes life enjoyable, honestly,” Romack said.
