HOUSTON (AP) An off-duty Houston police officer has shot and killed a man suspected in a string of robberies.
Investigators say the officer was working a security job and in uniform during the shooting Thursday night.
Authorities say the suspect was riding a bicycle and apparently looking into several businesses at a strip mall when the officer asked him for identification. Police say the suspect began walking away, the officer drew his gun and ordered the man to stop. The pair struggled and the suspect ran, but was caught by the officer.
Police spokesman Kese (KEES) Smith says the suspect put his hands in his waistband and charged the officer, who fired once. The suspect died at the scene.
The officer, whose name wasn't immediately released, has been put on administrative leave.
