VATICAN CITY - - The Vatican has said the new pope feels comfortable using Italian, at least for now.
But there's no word on why Pope Francis today didn't read the list of Easter greetings in 65 languages that was prepared for him. Francis has stressed his role as a pastor to his flock -- and as Bishop of Rome, Italian would be his language.
Like popes before him, Francis today used his Easter message to pray for peace in the Mideast and elsewhere. And he said his greetings were aimed particularly at those places "where the suffering is greatest."
Francis also denounced what he described as the "selfishness" that he says plagues the world, threatening human life.
The more-than 250,000 people who gathered in St. Peter's Square on this Easter Sunday were rewarded with a visit from the new pontiff. After celebrating Mass, Pope Francis stepped aboard his pope-mobile for a spin through the crowd, kissing babies and patting children on the head.
