ATLANTA (AP) Snowplows that rarely leave the garage are being put to use in parts of the South, as a winter storm brings snow, ice and brutal cold to the region.
Snow is falling in Jackson, Miss., and it's covering buildings in Atlanta. As far west as Austin, Texas, roads glazed with ice have caused dozens of wrecks.
As many as 50 million people could be affected by the winter weather.
Much of Georgia is under a winter storm watch for today and tomorrow, with some areas expected to see as much as three inches of snow. But forecasters say ice could be the real threat.
It was a balmy 62 degrees yesterday in Charleston, South Carolina -- but the approaching weather led the College of Charleston to cancel classes today.
