Police officers are there to protect and serve. But at what price?

"Some things will stick with me for the rest of my life that I have seen. Whether it be a death scene or an accident scene," said Kelley McKethan, Bryan Police Department.

McKethan says becoming a police officer is not about the money.

It can't be - considering how much some people in law enforcement make.

Police officers in Brazos County make around $42,000 their first year. Just 40 miles away in Madison County, the starting pay for deputies is $28,974.

"I can't compete," said Madison County Sheriff Travis Neely.

Sheriff Neely says he knows his deputies make a lot less than most other agencies in the area, even though they're responding to the same types of calls.

"They truly have a commitment for public service. Its admirable. I wish I could compensate them for that. But I cant," said Neely.

That's because the County Commissioners Court decides salaries.

Sheriff Neely tells us the low pay has led to a high turn over rate within the office. However, the bigger issue is that fewer people seem to be interested in law enforcement in general.

"It does take a certain type of person to become a police officer. You have to be authoritarian and also a humanitarian," said McKethan.

It also takes someone who is willing to wait for promotions and more pay.

The average salary for a law enforcement officer in Texas is $52,130, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
