BOSTON - Blizzard warnings and forecasts of potentially record-breaking snow from New York City to New England are being taken very seriously.

Accumulations could reach 10 to 14 inches in New York and up to 2 feet in the Boston area. It's expected to start falling Friday morning and continue into Saturday. Wind gusts could reach 65 mph. That combination is expected to cause widespread power failures and flooding in some coastal areas.

That's prompted major precautions. Schools in New England cities including Boston have cancelled Friday classes. Airlines have scratched more than 2,600 flights through Saturday. Amtrak says its Northeast trains will stop running Friday afternoon.

The governors of Connecticut and Massachusetts have ordered nonessential state workers to stay home Friday.

Residents are also preparing. From Pennsylvania to Maine, people rushed to stock up on food, shovels and other supplies.
