AUSTIN, Texas - - Ninety days into the 83rd Legislature, lawmakers are working with little rancor this session. But with 50 days remaining, there is still time for hot-button issues to take over the headlines.

Both the Texas Senate and the House of Representatives have passed their versions of the state budget a full month earlier than they did in 2011.

This session's spirit of bipartisanship was apparent last week when House Republicans and Democrats joined together to block public school vouchers for private school tuition.

House Speaker Joe Straus and Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst have so far tamped down the biennial culture war in favor of focusing on essential government responsibilities. But still lurking is a number of measures on guns, abortion and sex education that could bring back bitter partisanship.
