October is Down Syndrome Awareness Month. Locals showed their support as they laced up their walking shoes to participate in the 10th Annual Buddy Walk at the Wolf Pen Creek Amphitheater Sunday.
"Buddy Walk is a one-mile walk to promote the acceptance and inclusion of people with Down syndrome," said Christy Knight, Executive Director of the Down Syndrome Association of Brazos Valley.
Organizers began the celebration with a balloon release, showing significance of the community's decade long efforts. This year had the largest turnout with 1,712 participants.
Knight said at least $50,000 was raised towards helping those in the Brazos Valley area with Down syndrome.
