Giddings police say an illegal immigrant has been charged with an attempted kidnapping at Giddings Intermediate School.

Jose Antonio Barron-Mendez is in the custody of immigration and customs enforcement.

The school's assistant principal called police after Barron-Mendez allegedly tried to pick up a student who didn't know him. The suspect was reportedly trying to pass himself off as a teenager.

Police were able to track Barron-Mendez down from a license plate number the assistant principal wrote down. He was arrested last Thursday and is being held on a $50,000 bond.
