There is new information regarding a prison escape that left a correctional officer dead.

We brought you this story when it happened in September, and Friday, the two men responsible for Susan Canfield's death face new charges.

Jerry Martin and John Falk, the two inmates accused of this crime have been indicted by a Walker County Grand Jury. They both face capital murder charges.

They have also been indicted for offenses including attempted capital murder, aggravated kidnapping, aggravated robbery, aggravated assault and interference with a police service animal.

Martin and Falk were arrested on September 24, 2007. The day the two inmates escaped work detail in a nearby field and overpowered correctional officer Susan Canfield.

Officials say Falk and Martin took Canfield's weapons, stole a city vehicle, and struck the horse she was riding. Canfield fell to the ground and died.

The two inmates allegedly ditched the first vehicle, stole another from this bank's parking lot and were later captured by authorities.

At the time of the murder, Falk was serving a life sentence for murder, while Martin was serving a 50-year sentence for a variety of crimes including theft and two counts of attempted capital murder.

Walker County District Attorney David Weeks says he plans to prosecute Falk and Martin simultaneously and the jury will have the option of imposing the death penalty.

A trial date has not been set.
