Residents in some College Station neighborhoods awoke Wednesday morning to find the brick mailboxes in front of their homes had been destroyed by vandals.

Ron and Rosalie Glenn live in Castlegate, a usually pleasant neighborhood, but after going to bed Tuesday night, they awoke to find an unpleasant surprise on Wednesday. The brick mailbox required by their homeowner's association to match their home had been reduced to rubble.

"Anytime, if you have that somebody that tears up somebody else' s property that they worked hard for it's very discouraging," said Ron Glenn.

Police report nine brick mailboxes in neighborhoods across south College Station including Nantucket, Great Oaks and Castlegate were deliberately damaged. No one knows who did this and homeowners feel it is not right.

College Station resident Rosalie Glenn said, "I'd like to get hold of them and see that they're punished for their act."

Until their mailbox is repaired, the Glenn's have put up a makeshift mailbox to make it easier for their carrier to deliver their mail.

"We'll see the true test when he delivers the mail today," said Ron Glenn.

A few miles from the Glenn household in the Great Oaks neighborhood, Pam Johnson simply pleads with the vandals not to destroy any more mailboxes. Johnson believes teenagers did this on purpose and it is something that is not hard to pull off. "They bring their truck right up to the thing and gently push and it just falls over,"said Johnson.

Besides having to clean up the broken and scattered bricks, homeowners also have to shell out some cash. Making repairs can cost anywhere from $500 to thousands of dollars.

"They just waist our time and money and they think it's great fun, but it's not," said Johnson.

While other neighbors feel lucky their mailboxes went untouched, the big concern is that the vandals will come back again and again.
