One of Brazos County's oldest communities has received a brand new honor.

The Brazos County Historical Commission dedicated a park Monday commemorating the old Providence Church. Dating back to the mid 1800's, the Providence Church was the cornerstone of the Providence community in West Brazos County.

It served the religious, cultural and social needs of residents until the 1940's when it was deeded to the state with the provision that the church not be forgotten. The state kept its word as the Texas Department of Transportation designed and built the new park dedicated Monday.
