Dan R. Jones will take over July 1 as the new president of Texas A&M University-Commerce.
Texas A&M University System regents chose Jones as the 11th president of the East Texas school during a meeting by telephone Wednesday.
Jones currently is provost and vice president for academic affairs, chief student affairs officer and English professor at Texas A&M International University in Laredo.
Texas A&M-Commerce has more than 8,800 students and a staff of more than 1,100.
Also, F. Dominic Dottavio has been named 15th president of Tarleton State University. He'll begin his duties on Aug. 1.
The Texas A&M University System Board of Regents made the announcement on Wednesday.
Dottavio was selected as the sole finalist for the position at the March Board of Regents meeting.
He has been president at Heidelberg, a 158-year-old private college in Northwest Ohio, since 2003. He was previously chief scientist for the Southeast Region of the National Park Service.
Tarleton is based in Stephenville.
