An armed holdup at a Caldwell grocery store ends in a shootout that leaves the suspect dead and a police officer wounded.
Authorities say Louis Arvin tried to rob the Brookshire Brothers grocery store on Highway 36 Tuesday afternoon.
When officers arrived, he fled, leading to a high-speed chase. The pursuit ended at a home on Highway 21, adjacent to the Loving Word Christian Ministry chapel.
"We heard a pop," Caldwell resident Tom Corsello said. "Then a pop, pop, pop."
Gunfire erupted in the front yard of the Caldwell home. According to Texas Ranger Frank Malinak, Arvin shot Cadwell Officer Cougan Hignight. Hignight returned fire, killing Arvin.
Officer Cougan Hignight was transported to St. Joseph Regional Health Center in Bryan with a gunshot wound in his right arm. He was later released.
