The Bryan-College Station community gathered Saturday to celebrate the fifth annual Dia de los Muertos event at Sue Haswell Park.
Everyone remembered their loved ones and some brought photographs of those in remembrance and placed it on an alter as traditionally done so throughout the world.
The event included various activities for the entire community, including a bouncy house, food and an evening mass service.
"Ultimately it's about education and connecting the family," said Daniel Hernandez, attorney at Hernandez Law Firm and co-founder of the event. "And it's not just for people of one faith. It's a cultural event that celebrates something that has very much become part of the American culture. Culture is built upon culture. The beauty of it is that we are bringing it all together."
This year the Americana Familia Foundation provided funds to Bryan ISD's "Read by 3rd" initiative focused on preparing parents to partner with teachers in order to help their children achieve academic success. Recipients were awarded scholarships after mass. The scholarship was geared towards high school seniors who speak English as their second language. It funds one full year of their tuition and books.
In years past, sponsors of the Dia de los Muertos celebration have given more than $10,000 in scholarships to students at Bryan High School.
