The city of Bryan could be in line for its first tax rate raise in eight years.
That will be a major focus of upcoming budget hearings.

The council on Tuesday set that hearing for the next council meeting, which is August 12.

The tax rate in Bryan since 2001 has been at 63.64 cents, but city staff is proposing a one cent increase.

That would put the city's budget for operating and capital funds, including BTU, at around $380 million, up 16 percent from last year. That includes an eight percent increase in the fuel budget over last year.

According to city officials, that one cent increase in the tax rate would be used, in large part, for the city's façade program to help revitalize downtown and surrounding areas.
