County Prepared to Take in Animals in an Emergency

When the threat of Hurricane Rita had evacuees sitting on interstates for hours, many people- including employees of the federal government- realized they needed more of a plan.

FEMA mandated that cities and counties designate a place to take evacuated pets.

"It will basically be what the red cross is to people, but for animals," said Dr. Laura Bay-Williams.

Bay-Williams is heading up the county's small animal issues committee.

"Certain cities have been designated to come to us and as long as they have room in the shelters, we have to find a place for the pets," said Bay-Williams.

Hurricane Rita evacuees brought 800 pets with them to Bryan/College Station.

Many shelters don't take pets.

"Some hotels won't allow them either so it just gives people a safe place to leave their animals," said Bay-Williams.

She hopes it will help avoid part of what happened in New Orleans.

"People during Katrina did not Leave, would not evacuate cause they were told they had to leave their dog," said Bay Wiliams.
