9:43 A Hurricane watch is now in effect for the upper Texas coast, officially stretching from Port O'Connor, TX to Intercoastal City, LA. A Huricane Watch means that hurricane conditions are possible within the watch area... generally within 36 hours. As of the 10pm update from the National Hurricane Center, Tropical Storm Edouard had sustained winds of 50 mph with its center about 80 miles to the south of New Orleans, LA at 28.1N and 88.5W. The Movement is due west at 5 mph and Edouard is expected to maintain a westerly track over the next 24 hours. Please stay tuned for further updates as we continue to monitor Edouard very closely.
As of 5pm, The National Hurricane Center in Miami upgraded TD #5 to Tropical Storm Edouard, the fifth named storm of the 2008 hurricane season. Located in the northeastern Gulf of Mexico, Edouard continues to press westward around the periphery of a huge high pressure system over the central U.S. Due to it's proximity to land and movement, tropical storm watches have been hoisted for the upper Texas coast from Port Lavaca, TX to Intercoastal City, LA. This means that tropical storm conditions are possible on the upper Texas coast within 36 hours.
Edouard continues to gather strength in the very warm waters of the northeastern gulf. Also aiding in the development of Edouard is the lack of wind sheer. Wind sheer rips the tops off the thunderstorms keeping it from getting stronger. As of now, the nearly non-existent sheer is forecast to become even weaker as it approaches Texas. Though not currently forecast, it is not out of the question that Edouard could become a hurricane before striking the upper Texas coast.
If Edouard continues on its forecast path, landfall can be expected on Tuesday morning. This will bring gusty winds and extremely heavy rain to parts of the Brazos Valley. Most areas can expect to receive 3-5" of rain with isolated amounts higher still. This storm warrants your attention!
