If Gustav were to hit the region, only one in eight Sam Houston State University students would be notified if the campus was forced to close.
That's because only 2,283 students, faculty and staff have registered for KatSafe.
The emergency notification system sends out emails, voice and text messages within minutes of a threat.
However, school officials say they can't keep students in the loop, if they don't sign up for KatSafe.
To sign up, students, faculty and staff should go to the SamWeb menu from the SHSU home page. After logging in, they will see a page with a link to the KatSafe online signup form.
