Gustav Evacuees Head to Huntsville; Some Classes Canceled

Walker County has begun taking evacuees from the Gulf Coast in advance of Hurricane Gustav's arrival.

Huntsville High School is the first shelter location being utilized. As a result, classes in the entire district have been canceled Tuesday.

Emergency officials are hopeful to have their shelters clear by Wednesday in order to reopen the high school, though it is possible more days of classes could be canceled.

As of early Sunday afternoon, about 300 people were at the high school.

Sam Houston State University has also taken in more than 200 students from Lamar University in Beaumont. Both schools are part of the Texas State University System.

The Sam Houston State Agriculture Center off of I-45 is acting as an animal shelter, and has been receiving animals throughout the weekend.
