HS Athletes Should Get School Credit Says Brenham Coach

High school Football players across Texas put in some sweat on friday nights. One Brenham coach thinks that hard work on the field should translate in the classroom.

Football Defensive Coordinator Craig Agnew says students who play sports should get more elective credit.

Under the current system, high schoolers need 26 credits to graduate.

At seven classes a year, over four years, theoretically kids should graduate with 28 credits, unless a student needed to take a remedial, or no credit class.

To graduate, students need a year-and-a -half of athletics, and three-and-a-half elective credits.

Brenham coach Craig Agnew wants to see four years of sports count towards more of those elective credits.

Now, regardless of how long a student plays a school sport, he or she can only count two years. That fulfills the athletic requirement and a half credit of electives.

Agnew has taken his concerns to the State Board of Education. They'll be discussing his proposal later this month.

"Its been emphasized for thousands and thousands of years that you have to train the body and the mind," said Board of Education Chairman Don McLeroy, of College Station.

"What coach Agnew is bringing to us is the fact that we wanna keep as many kids in athletics as possible. And I agree with that."

McLeroy believes the rest of the board will to. "It really helps the athlete, otherwise they are really under the gun."

The board will discuss the changes at its meeting in a week and a half, and is expected to vote in November.

If approved, McLeroy says he's unsure if the measure would be retroactive. Meaning current high school freshman and sophomore athletes, could still only get two years of credit for four years of sports.
