Texas is gearing up for Hurricane Ike's landfall and preparing for the worst. Governor Rick Perry has ordered all resources to be deployed in anticipation of the storm.
Nearly 50 buses from Dallas County rolled out Monday morning, bound for San Antonio. The buses will remain there, just in case they're needed for evacuation efforts.
Houston residents are also taking a proactive approach, gathering supplies to help potential victims of Hurricane Ike.
The Old River Terrace United Methodist Church has loaded nine disaster response trailers. The church says the trucks will be placed in various parts of East Texas to be used in early response should a hurricane hit.
In Brazos County, emergency response officials are participating in morning and afternoon conference calls with state officials and they are making sure volunteer organizations are ready to lend a helping hand.
"We're a shelter hub for the state, so we'll provide shelter and mass care for evacuees who come to our area," Brian Hilton said.
Brazos County officials are also urging motorists to gas up. They say the storm could weaken supply.
Meanwhile, the Texas Department of Transportation is preparing for mass evacuations, if Ike heads to the Houston-Galveston area.
"The Texas Department of Transportation is listening to our state operation calls from the state operation center and we're preparing to fuel up all of our equipment and be ready to go in case there is a call for contra-flow from Ike," Bob Colwell with the Texas Department of Transportation said.
With Hurricane Ike presenting an imminent threat to the Gulf Coast, the Governor's Division of Emergency Management has authorized Texas Task Force 1 to activate and plan for deployment ahead of the storm. Members will arrive in College Station Tuesday morning.
