With the possibility of Tropical Storm to Category 1 force winds blowing into the area over the weekend, local residents are starting to prepare for Hurricane Ike's arrival.

But if you're still needing to head out to the store to grab a few items, here are a few things you don't want to forget:

For Starters, water. It's recommended that you grab at least one gallon per person in your household, and as a rule of thumb FEMA suggests getting enough to last three to seven days.

When it comes to food, don't forget to pick up non-perishable items, like packaged or canned foods just in case the electricity goes out.

If the electricity does go out you'll definitely want to make sure you have a non-electric can opener.

Some other hurricane essentials you should always have handy are a first aid kit with any medications you have, glasses, and even hearing aids.

It's also recommended to pick up some extra personal hygiene items like toilet paper, towelettes or clean-up supplies, and any other special items for babies, the elderly and pets.

Speaking of pets be sure to stock up on food for them as well, and don't forget to pick up some batteries for flashlights or radios you may have at home.

Although the exact impact the storm may have on residents here in our area is not known yet, officials with FEMA say a few precautions could make a big impact on how you ride out storm.
