The bumps and bruises from Ike are stilling being felt by many Grimes County residents, where the power is still out in a large portion of the county, keeping kids out of school for the rest of the week.

"It's really a struggle because a lot of our residents have power and some don't," Anderson-Shiro Superintendent Fred Brent said. "So we have some families at home not knowing what to do with their kids all day, and then some wanting to leave the area."

But with no electricity, wind damage, and some minor leaks the school has been forced to close its doors.

"There's a few leaks in the cafeteria as well," Brent says while pointing up at the ceiling.

Mops, brooms, and trash cans to catch leaking water now fill the cafeteria. In the kitchen, the food is scarce.

"We've had to unload the freezers and refrigerators and we worked with the sheriff's department in putting our frozen foods in the jail's freezer," Brent said.

In return the school is letting the sheriff's department use the school parking lot as a water and ice refilling station for emergency officials to distribute to nearby cities.

"In the big picture we've really been fortunate," Brent said.

Once power is restored to the area, the superintendent says it will take a full 24 hours before kids can report back to school. That's because school staff will need time to get in and clean-up the building from the storm and get food back into the building for the students.

To help employees in the Anderson-Shiro school district who may need some extra funds, the ISD is also advancing paychecks to all staff.
