They may be local linemen to us, but to the hurricane-battered residents of San Augustine, six BTU workers are heroes.
After Ike hit last week, linemen Mark Bryan, Jason Fiebig, Kevin Fritsche, Chris Green, Rodney Jackson and Todd Singletary volunteered to travel to San Augustine to help. For four days they worked around the clock to restore electricity to the East Texas town of 2,500.
"The people were in need," said Fiebig. "They needed someone who could help them out. They didn't have any power, they didn't have a way to restore it themselves."
For Fritsche, who also volunteered with BTU during Hurricane Rita, helping those in need is nothing new. "It means a lot when you go down there and get the lights up for people," he said. "I've seen people without power for months. We went down there and in about four days we got everybody else back up."
For their efforts and sacrifice, San Augustine officials awarded the six a key to the city.
