FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) - A Texan suggested as Veterans Affairs secretary says he'd have to consider whether he could be more effective in the Cabinet or the U.S. House.

Congressman Chet Edwards of Waco yesterday said he has not been approached by President-elect Obama, who considered him as a possible running mate.

Edwards told The Associated Press, during a veterans clinic groundbreaking in Fort Worth, that he "would want to think long and hard" about it.

Edwards chairs the House Military Construction and Veterans Affairs Appropriations Committee.

He's the second-highest ranking Democrat on the Energy and Wate
Appropriations Committee. Edwards also serves on the House Budget
and Appropriations committees and Homeland Security Appropriations

Edwards was just re-elected to his 10th term representing the district that includes President Bush's Crawford ranch.
