Joe Wilder has been farming in the Brazos Valley for over 40 years and he's seen a lot of changes on his farm, a farm that's been in the family since 1912.

One of those changes has been the arrival of wheat. Thanks to science, Joe has been able to grow wheat over that past 10 years and each year the crop is becoming more and more acclimated to our area.

"The seed companies have come in and developed a lot of varieties that do work real well in our areas now. We can yield what the boys yield in the panhandle. So we feel like it give us another alternative, another crop to plant." said Wilder.

A major factor in Joe's decision to start growing wheat is simply location.

"Us being close to the port really helps us. Especially this past summer when fuel was so expensive. You don't realize it but when you start saving 20 or 30 cents here and there, it adds up." said Wilder.

The amazing part about wheat is it's agility! It can take pretty much anything, including a blanket of snow on top of it for months! But the recent winter weather has still been tough for Joe.

"Like I said, it can take anything. This roller coaster ride this past week or so has been tough on our cattle and tough on me." said Wilder.

What is comes down to for the long time farmer is a good soaking, something he has full confidence in happening.

"We need a good rain right now. If we don't, we might have trouble. We'll have a skimpy stand cause I know we'll lose some of the seed. But I know we're going to get some rain because the weathermen are predicting it." joked Wilder.
