Family Admitted to Search Site at Lake Belton


LAKE BELTON (March 18, 2009)-Family members of the boater missing since a boating accident Tuesday evening were admitted into the search area Wednesday morning at Lake Belton

Belton Assistant Fire Chief Billy Pritchard said the man was last seen either wearing or clutching onto a life jacket after the vessel in which he was riding on Belton Lake capsized.

The search resumed Wednesday morning for the missing boater just after 7:00a.m.

A Game Warden from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department arrived first on the scene Wednesday morning, boat in tow.

Shortly after, DPS Troopers, Killeen Police Officers arrived to assist with the search.

The dive team with the Morgan’s Point Volunteer Fire Department also brought out its water rescue craft Wednesday morning.

Authorities had called off the search around midnight.

A massive rescue operation continued late into the night Tuesday in Bell County after a 14-foot boat that capsized on Lake Belton.

Five people were on the boat at the time.

One of those boaters was confirmed dead.

Another was flown via helicopter to Scott & White Hospital.

Authorities said that person appeared to be OK; an update on their condition was not immediately available Wednesday morning.

The three others made it ashore and were treated by EMTs on the scene for exposure.

The Boating Accident
The boat capsized just after 7:15 p.m. Tuesday near Sparta Valley Park.

Pritchard said rescuers were searching for a man who witnesses said was either wearing or clutching onto a life jacket.

Pritchard said that a check with the Medical Director at Scott & White revealed the water temperature at the lake was 56 degrees and survivable for a reasonable amount of time.

Morgan's Point Fire Dive Team, Fort Hood's team, Bell County Sheriff's Office, the Belton Fire Department, Nolanville Fire Department, and a number of other agencies participated in Tuesday night’s rescue efforts.
