Saving You Money: Repairs Up in Tough Times

An old way to save is making a comeback.

We've found two local businesses that are actually saving you money while making some for themselves.

Tomas Gomez fixes 10 to 12 shoes a day. He's busier than he's been in 8 years. And Gomez has the economy to thank.

"They don't want to buy anymore shoes, they want to repair their old," Eva Gomez, Owner of Gomez Shoe Repair in College Station said.

Eva, Tomas' wife, says business is up about 30 percent since November.

"We replace full soles for $60, when a pair of shoes may be $200, $250," Eva Gomez said.

Half soles will set you back $45, heels can be replaced for $14.

Depending on the original cost of your pair of shoes, it may be cheaper to have them repaired, than to buy something new.

The Jewelry and Coin Exchange in College Station says sales are soaring.

"People are shopping for better deals, even people who can afford to buy whatever they want, they want their money to go further," Owner Donna Wall said.

Wall says jewelry repairs have spiked 50 percent in the last six months. They run anywhere from $12 to $200, depending on the item.

Also more people are buying used and trading in baubles and beads they no longer wear.

"Lets say a ring would sell for $6000 at a regular jewelry store, on sale for $6000," Wall said.
"If they come in and buy in our treasure gallery (used jewelry) it may be $2000, so it is drastically different, usually less than wholesale. We've seen more people doing that, especially in the last six months."

Consumers are spending their money wisely, but they're still spending. And that has these two businesses booming.
