HOUSTON (AP) - Floodwaters reached the tops of utility poles in
some parts of west Houston as heavy rains dropped up to seven
inches of rain overnight.
Hundreds of motorists were forced to seek refuge in elevated
parking lots as floodwaters rose on some expressway service roads.
The rain fell throughout the morning rush hour from Houston to
Bryan-College Station. The disrupted morning commute prompted some
Houston-area school districts, including Cypress-Fairbanks and
Spring Branch, to cancel classes for the day. It also prompted
Houston school district officials to postpone the Texas Assessment
of Knowledge and Skills from today until tomorrow.
There were some high-water rescues of motorists this morning,
but no injuries were reported.
