May 10, 2008 is a date Salvador Granados will never forget. It was on that day that Salvador's hand got caught in a machine which tore his fingers right off.

After a long healing process, doctors in Houston attached a few of Salvador's toes to his hand to make fingers, and now life has a whole new outlook.

"I'm happy, I feel fortunate," said Salvador through a translator. "I didn't have anything to use and now I can use my three fingers to at least grab stuff."

With each surgery came better results and Salvador is even impressing his therapist at the Brazos Valley Rehabilitation Center.

"Usually only see change in grip strength in little small increments like one or two pounds, but in a months time he's gotten from four to 19 pounds so I was impressed with that," said Mary Mayer, Salvador's therapist.

Even small things that most people do everyday mean the world to Salvador.

"Recently we found out that he can write with his hand again so he was real excited about that." said Mayer.

For Salvador daughter, Cinthya, it's Salvador's persistence to do things himself that made quite the impression.

"When it first happened, he used to just be at the house thinking he couldn't do anything. We would try to help him but he wouldn't let us, he would just try to do it himself. And now we don't even ask him if he needs help because we know he can do it." said Cinthya.

Replacing fingers with toes may seem like science fiction for some of us, but this hard working father was worried about other things.

"I knew it was possible, but when I looked at my feet and saw they were fine I didn't want to mess them up so I could fix my hands," said Granados.

We asked if it was worth it. Granados said, "Si."
