We invited the candidates in a couple of primary runoffs with big implications to answer one broad question: what do you think are the three biggest issues in this campaign?
Duane Peters, a Republican running for Brazos County judge, said these are the biggest issues on his mind:
ISSUE #1: The Budget
"My biggest concern would be our budget and making sure that...we cannot raise taxes. That's one thing we've got to be really concerned about. We don't want to affect our local economy any worse than it's going to be affected by the national scene, so that's probably the biggest issue that we need to face.
"We've been really fortunate in Brazos County to live where we live. Our economy has not been affected anywhere near the degree it has in a lot of other places, so we're really fortunate to be here. It's something we want to keep our eye on, and we'll look at budget again this year and see if there's anything that needs to be trimmed out there. If there is, we'll do that."
ISSUE #2: Creating a Regional Fair
"The Expo...we've got a great facility out there. We've done very well with that. We've had lots of events coming in, but a signature event is really what makes a complex like that come close to breaking even, if not breaking even.
"It'll probably take two years to build one, to have one started. The Heart O' Texas in Waco and Star of Texas over in Austin both, that's when they really do their best, when they get as close to breaking even is during their signature event, their fair. That's something we need to work on, and it's something I'd like to get done."
ISSUE #3: Moving the Tax Office
"I'd like to relocate the tax office closer to College Station. It needs to stay in Bryan because it's the county seat, and it's required by law to stay in the county seat.
"We've actually now acquired a tract of land in Park Hudson that's very close to University Drive.
"There are folks that would have like to have had maybe a second office opening out there, but that doubles the cost of the tax office, so we've got to watch dollars. The next best thing is to get the tax office located near the city limit line but stay in the city."

Peters, a Brazos County commissioner, is facing Mark Conlee in the GOP runoff. The winner will face independent Doug O'Brien. No Democrats are running for the office, and Republican incumbent Randy Sims decided against seeking another term.
