Bill Flores is the winner in the GOP runoff for U.S. House District 17.

Once the votes were counted, Flores had captured a vast majority of votes in both his home county (Brazos) and Rob Curnock's home county (McLennan). Overall, Flores won 64 percent of the vote.

"We need to focus on the economy," Flores told News 3 following his win. "We need to focus on deficit spending. If you look at my track record, if the voters look at my track record, that's the record that will help achieve what we need in Congress today. We need to pay attention to creating jobs, getting the budget balanced and getting some fiscal sanity in Washington, and my experience is directly on point in doing that."

Curnock was the Republican challenger to Democratic incumbent Chet Edwards in 2008. Curnock lost that race by 7.5 percent. Edwards now awaits Flores in the general election.

"He got his voters out," Curnock said. "We've got to congratulate him. They did a good job running a campaign and getting a successful turnout. We worked as hard as we could and our volunteers were just awesome, and we did everything we feel we could to make it go the way it did. Unfortunately, he just had a little more guns behind him."

Flores issued the following statement after winning the Republican nomination in the primary runoff election:

“I am honored and humbled by the trust that the voters have placed in me. Tonight we have taken an important step forward in returning limited government principles for our country and fixing the damage that Congress and this administration have created. Going forward, I will reach out to every Texan in this district who wishes to see our country return to fiscal conservatism, protect our social values, and adhere to the Constitution.

“I am deeply thankful for all of the people who supported us, tens of thousands of them across these 12 counties.

“I am more energized than ever to run a vigorous, issue-based campaign that will defeat Chet Edwards in November.”
