Brazos County Commissioner Duane Peters cruised to a big win Tuesday against Bryan Mayor Mark Conlee in the Republican runoff race for Brazos County Judge.
Peters ended up with 71 percent to Conlee's 29 percent of the vote. He will now face Independent candidate Doug O'Brien in the November general election.
Afterward, Peters said he was a bit surprised at his margin of victory. "I was really taken aback. I had hoped for 54-55 percent," he said. "When you get in a political race, I don't have a feel for it and I certainly didn't run any poll numbers or anything to find out. We ran the race like we were behind, that's the way I've always run before and hoped after all the hard work we'd be ahead and we ended up there."
As for his campaign from here on, Peters says to expect more of the same. "I think we'll continue with the same focus we had," he said. "I think limiting spending, trying to take care of money, carrying on the same way we did before."
