Edwards Wastes No Time, Fires Campaign Salvos at Flores

It did not take long for incumbent Democrat Chet Edwards to take aim at his newly crowned Republican opponent in the race for Texas' 17th District in the US House.

Wednesday on Brazos Valley This Morning, Edwards made his first comments on the general election race that was finalized the night before when Flores earned a landslide win in the Republican primary runoff.

"We're going to focus on two key facts. First, I've been a champion for our veterans and military families and have worked effectively on a bipartisan basis for jobs and economic development for our district," Edwards said, citing a recent trip involving an undersecretary for homeland security to Texas A&M and a grant for development in Bryan's industrial park.

"In terms of Mr. Flores, I congratulate him and look forward to the campaign ahead," Edwards continued. "I will say I think there are a lot of voters who don't realize he has never even once voted in a general election in our district, not even once. As late as four months ago, in December, he was still the CEO of a Houston oil company and was recruited by Washington, DC insiders to spend millions of his own money in order to try and buy this congressional seat."

Flores is a Texas A&M graduate who spent decades in the energy industry, including as a CEO. He moved to Bryan in 2006, and has said he did so without political ambitions.

After earning 33 percent of the votes in the March primary, Flores was able to put 2008 Republican nominee Rob Curnock away in Tuesday's runoff, earning nearly two-thirds of votes cast in the 12-county district, which stretches from just south of the Metroplex down to Grimes County, and includes Bryan, College Station and Waco.

Edwards has served ten terms in the US House, three of them representing District 17 as it has been drawn since 2004.
