The story of the Republican primary for District 17's seat is a bit of a tale of two elections. Bill Flores won the most votes in both March's primary and April's runoff, but the margins he won by are quite different.
In the March 2 election, there were five Republicans in the race. Flores earned 33 percent of the vote then, with Rob Curnock winning 29 percent.
A county-by-county breakdown shows Curnock taking more counties than any other candidate, as he took six of the 12 in the district (Bosque, Hill, Hood, Johnson, McLennan and Somervell). Flores won five (Brazos, Burleson, Limestone, Madison and Robertson), and Dave McIntyre scored a win in Grimes County.
Noting McLennan County specifically from the March election, Curnock won his home county with 35 percent of the vote. Flores won 31 percent in March in McLennan.
Looking at Tuesday night, the landscape changes dramatically. Flores earned wins in 10 of the 12 counties. The only two Curnock won were Hood and Somervell, and they weren't huge wins.
Looking at Brazos County, Flores earned 76 percent of the votes in his home county.
Maybe most notably, McLennan County went to Flores a month after Curnock won it, and by a very wide margin: 63 to 37 percent.
McLennan is Curnock's home county, but it's also Chet Edwards', and one he has won by wide margin each general election.
