Brady Talks VA Expansion, Budget Concerns

Posted: Tue 8:25 AM, Apr 20, 2010

During his trip through District 8, including Walker and Montgomery Counties, Congressman Kevin Brady is putting some of his focus on healthcare for America's veterans, including those who seek care in the area.

The Republican representative joined Brazos Valley This Morning Tuesday to discuss some of the items facing Huntsville, Conroe and the rest of his district. That includes a potential expansion to Conroe's Veterans Affairs facility.

"The DeBakey Center is wonderful, but it can be a long trip into Houston," Brady said, "so we created a new one, just like in College Station, we created a new healthcare clinic in Conroe. We're looking at expanding it because the number of veterans, especially those coming back from Iraq and Afghanistan, is just growing leaps and bounds. We want to make sure we take care of them."

Conroe's outpatient clinic is one of five under the DeBakey Center banner according to the VA's website. It was opened in 2007 to expand veterans care north of Houston. An estimated 44,000 veterans lived in Montgomery and surrounding counties when the facility opened according to the VA.

Brady says a key to expansion in the current economic times is the community finding affordable space to house the facilities as opposed to more expensive, large stand-alone buildings.

The congressman also discussed what he's hearing from healthcare providers in his district following the passing of reform, as well as the current situation regarding the federal budget.
