COLLEGE STATION Texas A&M University President R. Bowen Loftin, who has announced plans to rejoin the faculty and resume his teaching and research career, effective Jan. 13, 2014, has been honored by The Texas A&M University System Board of Regents with adoption of a formal resolution expressing appreciation for his outstanding leadership and dedicated service. The regents also bestowed on him “president emeritus” designation, beginning after his last day in office.

Texas A&M System Chancellor John Sharp formally recommended passage of the resolution, which the regents did unanimously and led a standing ovation for President Loftin at their Thursday afternoon meeting. In his remarks to the board, Sharp called Dr. Loftin “one of the most popular presidents in the history of the school.” Sharp said a framed copy of the resolution will be presented to Loftin at a subsequent suitable occasion.

The extensive resolution honoring Loftin, a 1970 Texas A&M graduate who was named president of his alma mater since Feb. 12, 2010 after serving in that office eight months on an interim basis, cited his many accomplishments and noted the university’s progress during his presidency.

During his tenure, Texas A&M enrollment surpassed the 50,000 milestone, which includes graduate enrollment and minority enrollment also at record levels, with each totaling more than 10,000 students. Record numbers of students are also enrolled at Texas A&M University at Galveston and Texas A&M University at Qatar.

The resolution also cited President Loftin’s key role in enhancement of academic programs and research-related advances. It also noted expansion of campus facilities during his tenure, including the reopening of the renovated and expanded Memorial Student Center.

Special note was made of Loftin’s leadership in the university’s “hundred year decision” to join the Southeastern Conference, with the resolution also citing the success of the university in several athletic areas.
