Actor Danny Glover will be the featured speaker at the annual Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Breakfast, planned from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Thursday (Jan 17) in the MSC Ballroom.

Organizers with the Memorial Student Center Woodson Black Awareness Committee say the MLK Breakfast, now in its sixth year, serves as a formal way to reflect on the life, legacy and accomplishments of Dr. King. They say the goal is not only to honor him but also to make his legacy relevant for the university and its students, faculty and administration.

Glover is an actor, film director and political activist. He is well known for his roles as Albert Johnson in The Color Purple, as Michael Harrigan in Predator 2, as corrupt cop James McFee in Witness, as Detective Roger Murtaugh in the Lethal Weapon film franchise, as Detective David Tapp in Saw and as George Knox in Angels in the Outfield. He has also appeared in many other movies, television shows and theatrical productions. He is an active supporter of various humanitarian and political causes.

Tickets for the MLK Breakfast are $8 for students and $12 for faculty/staff/guests. They are available at the MSC Box Office by calling (979) 845-1234 or tickets@msc.tamu.edu.

The breakfast is one of the community events leading up to Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Jan. 21. Another annual event scheduled is the 17th annual Martin Luther King Freedom Walk. The walk will begin Jan. 21 at 9 a.m. at Sadie Thomas Park (129 Moss Street) in Bryan and end at Kemp Elementary School (1601 W. MLK Street).

Transportation will be provided back to Sadie Thomas Park at the conclusion of the program. In the event of inclement weather, the program will begin at 10 a.m. at Kemp Elementary School.

Organizers say this annual event brings the Brazos Valley community together to reflect on the principles such as courage, truth, justice, compassion, dignity, humility and service for which Dr. King embodied. A tribute, featuring members of the community, will follow the walk at 11 a.m.
