Aggie Softball Collects Donations for Moore, West Victims

Sometimes, in this day in age, all it takes is a tweet or two. That's what one coach at Texas A&M used to spark some local support for communities in need.

As the Aggie softball team practiced Tuesday morning and prepared to hit the road for a Super Regional in Norman, Oklahoma, donations were being taken at the softball complex for victims of the Moore tornado and the West plant explosion.

One of Head Coach Jo Evans' assistants has ties to a business in West, and the players and staff had been asked to make whatever monetary donations they could.

Then, Moore was struck.

Evans sent out tweets late Monday asking people to drop off clothing and shoes for Oklahoma residents for the two hours prior to the team's departure for Norman, which is next to Moore, and throughout the morning, a steady flow of items came in.

"Really, maybe 12 hours, and here we are, and there's a lot of stuff going on," Evans said. "People are coming by with hugs and given us monetary locations. That's the Aggie Network right there in full force."

Lee Phillips saw our story at KBTX.com Tuesday morning and decided to bring a bunch of clothes he wasn't needing anymore.

"Gosh, this is impressive," he said, adding he was surprised by the outpouring.

Summer Burson and her mother were among the first to drop off items from their home. The young girl said it made her feel good "because I'm helping other people."

The amount of donations was so large that another bit of help was needed. Conlee Garrett Moving and Storage brought a truck to load up the items and take them to Moore because the team bus wasn't big enough to carry them and the team. The players and coaches still took the monetary donations in the neighborhood of $3,500 to West as they went on their way to Norman.

Super Regional play is set to begin Thursday.
