Authorities say a Navasota man claimed he would have kept running over a person he was fighting with, but his van got stuck.
Viviano Rangel, 48, remained in the Brazos County jail Saturday morning, charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, along with drug possession charges.
According to the Brazos County Sheriff's Office, while deputies were on the way to a dispute at a property off of South Highway 6 in South Brazos County Friday, dispatchers received word that Rangel had run over the other person, Aurelio Rangel.
When authorities arrived, they say they found a white van parked on top of a gate at Aurelio Rangel's property. Viviano Rangel reportedly told law enforcement that there had been a long-standing dispute between the two.
Viviano allegedly told a deputy that he had seen Aurelio standing at the gate, rammed his van through the gate and knocked Aurelio down, and that the only reason he didn't continue running Aurelio over was that the van got stuck on the gate and a rock.
Authorities believe Aurelio's left leg was hit and his left foot was pinned, but he was able to free it. Aurelio reportedly told law enforcement he had earlier asked Viviano to leave the property, and when Aurelio returned from work, Viviano was still there with a pipe in hand. Viviano didn't use the pipe, but a verbal altercation eventually led to the alleged van attack.
Authorities say they found controlled substances on Viviano Rangel. His total bond was set at $41,330.
It was not made clear in the probable cause statement whether Viviano Rangel and Aurelio Rangel are related.
