A Bryan man has been arrested for his alleged involvement in a local car scam.
45-year-old Floyd Crouch Jr. was a wholesaler who worked with a local car financing company, so police say he had permission to purchase cars with their credit account.
He allegedly purchased a 2002 Toyota Camry for a College Station woman on behalf of Cooter's Cars in Bryan. The woman told investigators she signed a loan contract, and she had receipts for several car payments totaling $3,400.
Police discovered Crouch never told Cooter's Cars about the purchase or the contact, and he allegedly pocketed the woman's money.
The owner of Cooter's Cars told police that Crouch is also under investigation for doing the same thing to someone else, according to probable cause documents.
Here are some ways you can avoid similar scams, according to the Bryan Police Department:
-Make sure you have receipts for any car payments you have made, especially if you use cash.
-Use checks, because you have that paper trail.
-Once the transaction takes place, double check the paper work
-You should receive the registration sticker and license plate for the vehicle within two months
Crouch is charged with theft. He was released from the Brazos County Jail Thursday afternoon.
