COLLEGE STATION, Texas A College Station woman who says she was nearly scammed over the phone, wants to get the word out to other potential victims before it's too late.
Nicola Naibert has a few medical issues that keep her from getting out as much as she'd like, but she's definitely not out.
"Street smarts goes a long way," said Naibert.
When someone called Naibert on the phone, promising her she'd won $25,000 and all she had to do was answer a few questions about her personal financial information, she knew right away something was wrong.
"And he said, do you have a bank account that we could put it in," said Naibert. "I said, I have a bank account, but you're not getting the number."
Naibert tracked down the number to a location in Burton. The number directs the caller to a website that asks for a phone number to call with a survey. The site promises that if you let them call you, you'll be entered to win $25,000.
Bill McGuire with the Better Business Bureau Brazos Valley said it's never a good idea to give out your personal information.
"Giving a stranger who calls you on the phone information that is your personal information, is bad news," said McGuire.
McGuire said it's better to be safe than sorry. He said phone scams are on the rise, and the people behind them are getting better at what they do.
"They want to convince you that they're a legitimate whatever. They want you to let your guard down so they can take advantage of you," said McGuire.
Naibert said she has a message for any potential victim.
"It's a dangerous world out there. The best way to protect yourself is to keep your information to yourself," said Naibert.
