A drastic change to the lines of Texas House District 57 may have spelled the end for incumbent Republican Marva Beck.
The Leon County rancher fell to Lufkin real estate company president Trent Ashby Tuesday night. Ashby earned 58 percent of the vote to Beck's 42 percent.
No Democrats are running for the seat, meaning Ashby is all-but-assured of going to Austin for the next legislative session.
Two years ago, Beck upended longtime Democratic representative Jim Dunnam from Waco. Then, Leon County was on the east side of the district. With new maps drawn, District 57 now sees Leon County on the far west side, with Ashby's Angelina County near the eastern edge.
Ashby also has served as Lufkin ISD's board president.
