Fourteen area teachers got a fresh look at science Wednesday during the fifth annual Summer Science Seminar for Teachers, hosted by Blinn College’s Division of Science, Engineering & Mathematics.

Presentations ranged from chemistry to microbiology to spiders, as kindergarten through 12th -grade teachers learned to engage their students in science from Blinn College – Brenham campus faculty during the daylong seminar.

“It’s a unique kind of professional development,” said Karen Killion, event facilitator and natural science instructor. “It’s great to help these teachers increase their knowledge base and get them a step ahead in the classroom.”

The seminar began in 2009 as a way to support professional development and introduce a handful of area high school teachers to the College and its science facilities.

Killion’s first experience with the seminar was five years ago as a science teacher at Brenham high school. She attended the seminar twice before joining Blinn as a faculty member in 2011.

“I always looked forward to the seminar as a teacher,” Killion said. “As a facilitator, I love the event because it attracts the best of the best who truly have a desire to learn and help others do the same. It’s an honor to work with such dedicated educators.”

Teachers left the seminar Wednesday with not only a wealth of new tools for their classrooms, but eight hours of professional development credit and a grab bag full of hands-on activities provided through a donation from the Blinn College Foundation. Each teacher also took home door prizes donated by the Foundation and the College bookstore.
