The Blinn College livestock judging team earned reserve champion honors in the carload judging contest at the National Western Stock Show. The carload judging contest consists entirely of cattle, and rather than judging four individuals in a class, competitors judge four pens of cattle.
Blinn scored 1,590 points in the event, with Keaton Dodd (Blanco) leading the way with a fifth-place overall finish. Teammates included Justin James (Prosper), Lane Halfman (Garden City), Taylor Haliburton (Waco) and Zach Davis (Willis).
In the livestock judging contest, Blinn placed third out of 29 teams with 4,638 points. The squad also placed first in swine judging with 1,191 points.
James led Blinn’s individual competitors, placing seventh overall. Other teammates include Hunter Brietzke (Marion) and Holly Behrens (Port Lavaca).
The National Western Stock Show is one of the premier livestock exhibitions in the nation.
“The National Western’s tradition is unequalled,” Livestock Judging Coach Brant Poe said. “When you speak about livestock expositions, the National Western ranks at the top of the list as far as quality livestock and prestige. I am proud of the determination and perseverance that our team put forth to accomplish this.”
Blinn is coached by instructors Poe and Brandon Callis and is now looking forward to a busy spring with competitions planned at Fort Worth’s Southwestern Livestock Exposition, the San Antonio Livestock Exposition and The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.
The Blinn livestock judging team is a scholarship program in the Division of Agriculture and Applied Technology.
