It wasn't an ordinary blood drive at Sam Houston State University.

Students trickled into the school gym to donate as they went through the screening process, got their vitals checked and gave blood. And that blood donated is strictly for military use.

"It only takes a few minutes out of your day and it could eventually save a life," said Timothy Child.

Timothy Child is a 22-year-old student enrolled in the Simultaneous Membership Program, which allows him to be both a member of the National Guard and a Cadet.Child hopes to one day become a doctor in the Army.

"I know that I'm going to be appreciative of it if and hopefully I never do need blood; so it's good that there are people who do come out like civilians to give blood to us," said Child.

Organizers say that within four days all of the blood that is donated at this drive will be distributed to service men and women in Iraq, Afghanistan and VA hospitals throughout the nation.

Lt. Colonel David Yebra heads the Sam Houston State University ROTC and has served three tours in Operation Iraqi Freedom.

"The ability to just take care of our own is critical. There are sometimes that we are excluded from giving blood, service members, because of the places that we have been so we rely on other sources for that blood supply," said Yebra.

Graduate students felt the need to give.

"It does feel a lot better to know that I'm doing a simple thing that will end up making a big difference, especially for the military," said Kourtni Woods.

Organizers hope to collect 150 units from the blood drive.

Each pint will go toward helping those who fight to protect and serve us every day.

The ROTC blood drive will continue at the Sam Houston State University campus on Thursday, February 13 from 8 a.m to 3 p.m.
